Sitges bid farewell to June with sails aloft and an atmosphere that combined sport, heritage, and community during the Sitges Vela Clàssica 2025, held as part of the 50th anniversary of Port de Sitges-Aiguadolç. The event brought together nearly 20 classic yachts, offering a unique spectacle along the coast and reinforcing Sitges’ status as a leading destination for classic sailing in the Mediterranean.

The coastal race course allowed spectators onshore to enjoy the maneuvers of these historic boats, with a start off the iconic silhouette of the Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla church, a mark off Terramar, and another off Punta Gavina, showcasing Sitges’ coastline as a true natural sailing arena. Races on Friday and Sunday saw light winds that demanded focus and precision from crews, while Saturday brought steadier breezes that allowed the fleet to perform at full potential in a vibrant day on the water.

Celebrations began on Friday evening with an honor dinner for crews at El Vivero, where owners, captains, local authorities, and special guests gathered. Luis Miguel García, President of the Consell Comarcal del Garraf, delivered welcoming remarks, highlighting the regatta’s significance for the region, followed by a toast overlooking the sea that captured a spirit of community and respect for sailing. The traditional captains’ photo became a lasting memory of the evening’s camaraderie. The event concluded on Sunday afternoon with an awards ceremony held beside the Port Captaincy Tower, attended by the Councillor for Culture and the Port Captain, David Vellet Serramalera, who congratulated the crews for their commitment to keeping classic sailing alive on our coastline.

Race Results

In the Época category, Islander, helmed by Ricardo Albiñana, claimed a decisive victory with two first-place finishes (races 1 and 3) and a second place (race 2), demonstrating consistency and control across varied wind conditions. Close behind was Tagomago, sailed by Javier Solís, who won the second race and took two second places in the others to secure a well-earned second overall. Rounding out the podium was the British yacht Dreva, owned by Jean-Charles Fossati, which achieved a valuable third place in the final race, confirming its place among the leading contenders.

In the Clásico CIM category, Sea Feaver, owned by Enric Curt, showed solid form and speed, taking first place in the first two races and a second in the final race to secure overall victory. Izarra, helmed by Joan, delivered an outstanding performance in the final race to cross the line first on Sunday, adding to a previous second and third to finish second overall. The Belgian Bakea, skippered by Monica, completed the podium, with a second-place finish on Saturday helping secure its position despite a DNF in the last race.

In the Clásico II category, Jan Himp, helmed by Jan Freynuth from Denmark, dominated with authority, winning all three races to secure a perfect score and clear victory. Andrea, owned by Sergio Roberto López Vila, placed second with two runner-up finishes in the first two races and a fourth in the final, consistently maintaining proximity to the leader. Cygnet of Mourne, sailed by Antonio Espinosa, took two third places before retiring from the final race, enough to claim the third podium spot in a highly competitive fleet.

A Prestigious Closing with Germán Frers and Recluta

The highlight of the event was the presence of renowned yacht designer Germán Frers, who arrived in Sitges aboard his yacht Recluta, designed and built by himself in Argentina, to accompany the regatta and greet the crews. His visit added prestige to the Sitges Vela Clàssica, reinforcing its status as a key meeting point on the Mediterranean classic sailing circuit and inspiring owners and sailors with the recognition of one of the greatest figures in global yacht design.

The organisers also used this edition to present the new database of Spain’s classic yachts, available at sitgesvelaclasica.es, allowing the public to explore the history and specifications of each participating boat and consolidating Sitges as a reference point for nautical culture and maritime heritage preservation.

With this edition, the Sitges Vela Clàssica 2025 demonstrated that it is more than just a sporting event: it is a celebration of the sea, of the living history embodied by these boats, and of the community that Sitges represents, with classic sailing as the connecting thread in a legacy that continues to be written each summer in the bay of our town.
